Polypodiaceae is a family of the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of (PPG I), the family includes around 65 genera and an estimated 1, species and is placed in the order Polypodiales, suborder Polypodiineae.

A broader circumscription has also been used, in which the family includes other families kept separate in PPG I. Nearly all species are epiphytes, but some are Class: Polypodiopsida. Polypodiaceae, family (including Grammitidaceae) in the order Polypodiales, which contains 56 genera and about 1, species of diverse and widely distributed medium-sized and small ferns.

Some earlier classification systems have recognized as many as genera and 7, species in the family, most of which are now placed in other families.

This entire larger group is still often referred to. Dictionary entry overview: What does family Polypodiaceae mean. • FAMILY POLYPODIACEAE (noun) The noun FAMILY POLYPODIACEAE has 1 sense.

Polypodiaceae (Polypody Family) Ferns have a different set of identifying characteristics than flowering plants - please read Fern general, we identify fronds (the leaf), pinnae (leaflets of a frond), and sori (reproductive clusters found on the underside of the pinnae.).

Polypodiaciaceae produce their thick, shiny leaves in clusters, with light green petioles (leaf stems). Define family Polypodiaceae. family Polypodiaceae synonyms, family Polypodiaceae pronunciation, family Polypodiaceae translation, English dictionary definition of family Polypodiaceae.

family Polypodiaceae - ferns: a large family that in some classification systems has been subdivided into several families genus Cyclophorus - tropical. Polypodiaceae a family of plants of the class Filicales. They are perennials with creeping or sometimes ascending rhizomes that are covered with scales.

The leaves are pinnate, twice pinnate, lobed, or entire. There are approximately 65 genera, with up to 1, species. They are found predominantly in the tropics, where they often develop as epiphytes. Historically, Polypodiaceae was defined to include most of the so-called "higher" ferns, perhaps species.

Nowadays, it is usually circumscribed more narrowly, to include Polypodium and closely allied genera, groups having mostly undivided to deeply lobed blades, round sori, and lacking indusia. The grammitids were included in Polypodiaceae to render that family monophyletic.

[8] The linear sequence of Christenhusz et al. (), intended for compatibility with the classification of Chase and Reveal (), [9] incorporated new phylogenetic evidence to make several changes at the familial level, resulting in an expansion to 23 : Tracheophytes.

Abstract. Usually terrestrial or epiphytic, sometimes epilithic, usually small to medium-sized, sometimes large ferns with short- to long-creeping stem bearing basifixed, pseudopeltate or peltate, clathrate, opaque or hyaline scales that are marginally entire, toothed, ciliate, or lacerate, and provided with at least a terminal glandular cell; stele dorsiventral, dictyostelic.

Despite these advances, generic circumscriptions and relationships within some families are still not well understood and are in need of more focused studies.

Among the problematic families are Polypodiaceae, which comprise about 56. In the past, most of these have at one time been included in a single family, Polypodiaceae (or variants such as Filices or Dennstaedtiaceae, variously including Osmundaceae, tree ferns and gleichenioid ferns), resulting in great variability in application and circumscription of this family.
